Grant Helps Kootenai’s Safety Seat Program

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department presented 25 child safety seats to the Panhandle Health District in a recent ceremony.

The seats were purchased from the Coeur d’Alene Shopko Store at a discount price through a grant from the governor’s Office of Highway Safety, and will be used for the Health District’s Safety Seat Loaner Program.

The grant of $17,200 also is providing money for overtime so deputies can run special drunken driving emphasis patrols with the Idaho State Police and the C.A.R.E. unit, the Coeur d’Alene Police Department’s special traffic team.

The Post Falls Girl Scout Service Unit recently presented a $323 check to Marcie Mastel, director of Camp 4 Echoes, the Inland Empire Girl Scout Council’s camp on Lake Coeur d’Alene at Windy Bay.

The group raised money during its annual “Thinking Day” carnival last month and dedicated the proceeds to repair damage at the camp that was caused by November ice storms.

The camp serves hundreds of girls each year from North Idaho and Eastern Washington.

Racor, a Sandpoint home storage product manufacturer, has become a sponsor of the 1997 Alpine Designs professional mountain bike race team, also of Sandpoint.

Team Alpine Designs/Racor, which features two top professional riders, Caleb Stolte from Whitefish, Mont., and Jolanda Van Ooyen of Sandpoint, recently traveled to the Cactus Cup in Arizona and will compete this weekend at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, Calif.

The Coeur d’Alene Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) recently held its 46th annual Used Book Sale and Raffle at the Silver Lake Mall, with proceeds to be used for scholarships.

This year’s sale was the most successful ever and the AAUW would like to thank the community, businesses and organizations who donated used books, and Lori Blessing and the Youth Volunteer Association from Coeur d’Alene High School for sorting books.

Thanks also extend to The Book Seller, The Coeur d’Alene Association of Realtors, Jacklin Seed Co., J-U-B- Engineers Inc., Silver Lake Mall, St. Lukes Episcopal Church, and to the authors who donated copies of their books for a raffle: Dr. David Sadker, “Failing at Fairness;” North Idaho Chapter of Alzheimer’s Association, Memories Cookbook; and Louise Shadduck, “At the Edge of Ice.”
