Westminster Church Stage For Rogue Players

Theater

Rogue Players, a Spokane community theater, tries out a new and fitting venue beginning Friday.

“The Lion in Winter,” will be staged in the castle-like sanctuary of Westminster United Church of Christ, 411 S. Washington.

What better place for King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine to carry on their war of words?

“The Lion in Winter” is James Goldman’s 1966 hit play about 12th-century English royalty. Its witty and literate dialogue translated well to the screen; it was a triple-Oscar winner in 1968, starring Katharine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole.

The Rogue production features Kent Kimball as Henry, and Martha Wiley as Eleanor. Mary Wilburn directs.

The Rogue Players is still in search of a permanent site after leaving the West Central Community Center last year. The Masonic Temple did not work out. The church is a one-time-only venue, but a particularly appropriate one.

“The Lion in Winter” runs tonight, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and continues April 18-20. Showtimes are 8 p.m., except Sundays when the production begins at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children, students and seniors. For reservations, call 327-9907.
