Elderly Man, Kmart Targets Of Robberies

From Staff And Wire Reports

Two robberies occurred almost simultaneously Thursday on opposite sides of town, Spokane police said.

Both incidents occurred about 3:20 p.m.

In one robbery, a bandit forced his way inside the home of an 85-year-old man who lives in the 2500 block of South Chestnut, knocked the victim down and threatened to kill him.

The robber, who posed as a survey taker, stole the elderly man’s wallet and several other items before running away.

The victim, who wasn’t seriously injured, told police the attacker was black, in his 20s or 30s, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 160 pounds.

Across town at a Kmart at 6606 N. Division security guards wrestled with a man who tried to steal several expensive tools, police said.

The suspect, identified as Charles T. Bishop of Spokane, attacked one of the guards and threatened to kill the others as they subdued him, police said.

Bishop, 28, was booked into the jail on a charge of first-degree robbery.
