Record $5.6 Million Seized At Border

Compiled From Wire Services

It was the largest single seizure of cash headed across the U.S.-Mexico border: more than $5.6 million, found Wednesday afternoon stashed in the false ceiling of an otherwise empty tractor-trailer.

There was so much cash - in $5s, $10s and $20s - that it took officials more than six hours to count, even using currency counting machines from the Federal Reserve.

The stash was discovered while U.S. customs officials searched the truck attempting to enter Mexico in El Paso.

U.S. officials want to know the money’s source and intended recipient. They suspect it is related to drugs.
