Valley Christian Track Sporting Lots Of New Faces

Valley Christian School’s track program is starting anew.

Only two competitors from last year’s girls team have returned and five athletes from the boys team are back.

Most notable absences are defending State B discus champion Jay King, who switched to baseball in the school’s inaugural Bi-County League varsity season, and hurdler Teresa Dixon who is now competing at University High.

“I’d like to have Jay back, and a couple others, like Teresa,” said coach Don Dicus. “My whole thing is if you don’t want to be there, I’m not going to force you.”

Returned is state-placing hurdler and relay runner Carmen Evans to the girls team, and discus state placer J.J. Gass.

“J.J. is going to be able to fill Jay’s shoes,” said Dicus. “He’s put in a lot of work and filled out.”

Fellow throwers, junior Scott Jorgens and senior Joy Hopson are also back, along with 800 runner Chad Meyer and runner-high jumper Steve Stager.

Distance runner Brian Drozdov missed state berths in the 3,200 meters last spring and state cross country meet in the fall by a place and two.

“He has high expectations of himself,” said Dicus.

Beyond that the Valley Christian team is new.

Boys athletes include junior Mike Spuler, already under 54.0 in the 400 meters, freshman 400 runner-high jumper-hurdler Jared Evans, junior sprinter-long jumper-javelin thrower Daryl Jump and freshman distance runner Eric Dahl.

Girls athletes freshmen Katie Rosholt, Crystal Robertson and Katie Arnold fill the sprints and relays with Evans. Robertson also long jumps.

Two other freshmen, high jumper Tiffany Drozdov and thrower Stephanie Meyer round out the team.

“We have a small turnout this year and it’s a young group, which is exciting,” said Dicus.
