Deserter Suspected Of Two Shootings

Compiled From Wire Services

Police sealed off a district of Moscow after an army private deserted his unit Sunday and was suspected of fatally shooting one man and injuring another, Russian news agencies reported.

Police told the Interfax news agency that officers surrounded the Luzhniki district near the city’s biggest stadium and street market after the deserter shot a man who was walking his dog early Sunday.

A second man was wounded in a later shooting nearby, the independent NTV network reported.

NTV said the suspect was a member of the Defense Ministry’s security service, who seized a Kalashnikov rifle while guarding the military prosecutor’s office early Saturday.
