‘20/20’Gets Degeneres Interview

Philadelphia Inquirer

Try not to throw up, boys and girls. More Ellen “Yes, I Am” DeGeneres news. Diane Sawyer’s interview with the out-of-the-closet lesbian actress, originally scheduled for April 23 on ABC’s “PrimeTime Live,” will now run two days later on Barbara Walters’ “20/20.”

ABC owner Disney, which also owns DeGeneres’ “Ellen,” wants the big-ticket piece to air during the May “sweeps” ratings. Sweeps begin April 24. Given that it’s DeGeneres’ first TV interview, the show should get blockbuster numbers.

Once Sawyer bagged DeGeneres, “PrimeTime” slated the interview to run one week before “Ellen’s” “coming out” episode.

The network wanted the segment in sweeps, says an ABC spokeswoman. Pushing it to “20/20” was the only way to accomplish that and still have the first TV shot. (Oprah Winfrey’s chat with DeGeneres is set to air April 30.)

Despite the rivalry between Sawyer and Walters, ABC insiders swear that both divas are OK with the switch.
