Cowboys Scout Epps

Compiled From Wire Services

Former Kentucky basketball guard Anthony Epps, who finished second on the school’s career list in assists, worked out with Troy Aikman before a Dallas Cowboys scout in Lexington, Ky. Dallas is mulling whether to offer Epps a free-agent contract as a wide receiver.

Aikman threw dozens of passes to the former point guard during the workout on the Kentucky campus. Epps was an all-state football player in high school and led the state of Kentucky in receiving as a senior.

The Minnesota Vikings re-signed free-agent running back Robert Smith, their leading rusher last season. Terms of the contract weren’t disclosed.

Unless a deal is made by Saturday, the New Orleans Saints likely will have to wait until the eve of opening day to pry quarterback Heath Shuler from the Washington Redskins.

The Redskins are demanding a third-round draft choice in this weekend’s NFL draft for Shuler, who already has agreed to a four-year contract with the Saints for $7.6 million. New Orleans has offered two fifth-round picks instead.
