Police Group To Review High-Speed Chases

From Staff And Wire Reports

The perils of high-speed chases will be discussed at next month’s state meeting of sheriffs and police chiefs because the guidelines in general use here seem outdated.

“We periodically discuss things that we think need to be reviewed, and this is probably one of them,” said Larry Erickson, director of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs and former Spokane County sheriff. Erickson is a former Spokane County sheriff.

The organization will discuss new policy at its annual meeting next month in Olympia.

Even updated guidelines wouldn’t apply uniformly across the state, Erickson said. A police chase on lightly traveled roads in Adams County is not the same as a chase in downtown Seattle.
