Put Away The Skis; Grab Those Skates

Debbie Horn Knight-Ridder

You might have finished spring cleaning your closet and the garage, but have you done your fitness spring cleaning yet? It’s time to put the skis away and rotate your wheels; and I’m not talking about the family Suburban, I’m talking Rollerblades. The warm weather and open space are just around the corner. Here are a few chores to add to your spring cleaning list to guarantee a memorable summer of movement.

Retire last year’s running sneakers and head to your local athletic store.

Stock up on sunscreen: one for all over and another for your face and lips.

Drop your mountain bike off for a tune-up at the corner bike shop. Or better yet, take a bicycle-repair class at the rec center and do it yourself.

Pull your golf clubs out of the garage and practice your putt in the backyard.

Round up your safety gear: sunglasses, helmet, elbow and knee pads, wrist guards and gloves.

Pick up a map of the hiking, biking, and walking paths.

Put the bike rack back on the car.

Pack a safety kit: Band aids, bug repellent, antibiotic cream, aspirin, an ace bandage and a flashlight. Put it in the car and take it with you whenever you hike.
