Spokane events planned for Japan Week include:

Today

Opening ceremony, 11 a.m. at the Spokane Transit Plaza’s skywalk level. The free program includes a bonodori dance performed by students at Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute and members of Spokane’s Japanese American community. Call 466-3291 for more information.

Karate seminar with Master Hidetaka Nishiyama, noon to 4 p.m. at the Whitworth College Fieldhouse. Call 468-6988 for more information.

Japanese noodle dinner and book sale, 4:30 p.m. at the Spokane Buddhist Church, 927 S. Perry. Tickets are $6. For more information, call 534-7954.

“The Art of the Everyday: Buddhism and the Art of Tea,” 7 p.m. at the Spokane Buddhist Church. The Rev. Akira Takemoto will talk on the spiritual tradition of the tea ceremony and its relationship to Buddhist thought and philosophy.

Sunday

Hanamatsuri Service, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Spokane Buddhist Church. An observance of the Buddha Shakyamuni’s birthday.

Japan Day, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at NorthTown Mall. Cultural demonstrations presented by Eastern Washington University and Whitworth College.

Tuesday

“Spokane’s Opportunities in Asian Markets,” a business luncheon with Pacific Rim specialist Phil Jones, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute. Cost is $10. Call 328-2971 for reservations.

Jazz concert featuring Deems Tsutakawa and his jazz quartet, 11:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., Spokane Falls Community College’s Student Union Building. The event is free.

Japanese Ningyo (Doll) artist Kazuko Tamaoki will host a doll workshop, display and sale. 3 p.m. at Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute’s Japanese Cultural Center.

Jazz concert featuring the Mina and Koji Harada Quartet, 8 p.m. to midnight at Hobart’s Jazz Lounge, 110 E. Fourth Ave. $3 cover.

Friday

Noh Players, 11:15 a.m. to noon at Whitworth College’s Cowles Auditorium. The event is free.

Sansei Pride and Community Pride Luncheon, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute. Call 324-4266, ext. 211 for reservations.
