Museum Holding Sale Of Woodcuts, Lithographs

Nina Culver Correspondent

Original woodcuts, lithographs and etchings - from 1500 A.D. to 1996 - will be on exhibit and for sale Saturday at the Cheney Cowles Museum.

Quality and value are the overriding considerations in assembling this collection from the Davidson Galleries of Seattle, said Judy Grollmus, spokeswoman.

At 9:30 a.m., in the museum auditorium, Sam Davidson, gallery director, will talk on “Tony Fitzpatrick and Self-Taught Print Artists.” His presentation pertains to the museum’s current exhibit, “The Radiant Object: Self-Taught Artists from the Willem Volkersz Collection.”

At 10:30, Davidson will provide a verbal valuation of prints, antique paintings and other two-dimensional artworks owned by individuals for a $5 donation to the museum.

Many of the pieces to be sold are priced less than $100. Besides the antique pieces, the selection includes major works by contemporary American and European artists.

There is no admission charge.

And at GU …

Davidson Galleries of Seattle has also assembled prints for an art sale at Gonzaga University’s Jundt Art Museum. Etchings, lithographs and woodcuts from 1500 to the present will be exhibited and offered for sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday.

Works for sale include pieces by Goya, Rouault, Rembrandt … and contemporary artists. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Gonzaga’s teaching collection.

A second GU art exhibit is “Student Thesis” on display at the Jundt museum through May 10.

A preview reception of GU’s graduating art students will be from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday.

Museum hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday; and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Balazs workshop

Harold Balazs, a Spokane resident and nationally recognized artist, will teach the process of glass-on-metal enameling during a three-day workshop at The Spokane Art School, 920 N. Howard.

Balazs will teach how to explore imagery, materials and techniques. There will be glass, metal, tools and a furnace to use.

Balazs has “brought a new dimension and range to enameling” nationwide, said Sue Ellen Heflin, Spokane Art School spokeswoman.

Cost for the workshop, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday through April 27, is $200. To register, call 328-0900.

Color tots happy

A workshop, “Beyond the Coloring Book: Using Art in Day Cares and Preschools,” will be from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday and May 1, at the Spokane Art School, 920 N. Howard.

Anne Kanter will teach day care providers and preschool teachers how to integrate art into regular activities, how children’s perception develops, how to encourage creativity and how the art process is crucial to the development of non-verbal communication skills.

Techniques and concepts for providing meaningful art experiences for 2- to 5 year-olds will also be covered.

Cost is $25, with a limited number of scholarships available. To register, call the school at 328-0900.
