Salmon Restrictions

For the first time in Oregon history, fishing for salmon and steelhead in the Willamette River upstream from Oregon City has been restricted to Wednesdays and Sundays.

The restrictions are aimed at protecting an unusually low run of an estimated 30,000 of the highly prized spring-run chinook on the Willamette. The run normally peaks in May.

The Wednesday-Sunday rule has been in effect since March 11, but enforcement along the upper Willamette is being stepped up as more fish move past Willamette Falls at Oregon City.

“Up until now, people up here haven’t had to worry about this,” said Bob Kuhn of the Salem district office of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
