Washington State University’s Ian Waltz won the shot put and discus Saturday at the four-team Pepsi Invitational track and field meet at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

Waltz, of Post Falls, threw the shot put 58 feet, 4 inches, an NCAA provisional mark. His winning discus mark, 176-5, topped the field by nearly 11 feet. He has won both events for six consecutive weeks.

Bernard Lagat was also a double winner for the Cougars, who scored 175.5 points to finish second, 31 behind host Oregon.

Lagat won the 800-meter run in 1 minute, 49.46 seconds and the 1,500 in an NCAA provisional 3:46.82.

WSU’s Matthew Stadelman threw 209-4 to win the javelin.

Bob Keino of Arizona rallied to win the 5,000 in 14:17.55. Oregon sophomore Micah Davis, of Mead, led much of the final half and finished second in 14:19.54.

“Today was a good first step,” Davis said. “It was only my third 5K. I was glad to run my last mile strong and not die.”

Arizona’s Dameon Ortiz won the 200 and 400, and anchored the winning 1,600 relay team.

WSU’s Sharika Higgins nearly duplicated Ortiz in the women’s meet. Higgins won the 100 in 12.10, the 200 in 24.51 and ran a leg on the 400 relay winner (an NCAA provisional 44.97). Higgins has won the 100 for four consecutive weeks.

The Cougars’ Kristin Koch triple-jumped 37-8 for a win.

Sara Council placed second in the 3,000 with an NCAA provisional 9:42.10.

Oregon’s women won with 190.5 points. Second-place WSU scored 163.

Eastern Washington’s men and women outscored Montana State and the host Grizzlies at the University of Montana Open in Missoula.

EWU’s Seville Broussard won the women’s 100 hurdles (14.26), the 400 hurdles (1:00.43) and the high jump (5-10). The high jump equaled the school record and was an NCAA provisional mark. Broussard set her third school record of the year.

Also winning for EWU’s women were Adrienne Wilson, long jump, 18-3-1/4; Christina Withey, pole vault, 9-1/4; and Dawn Baerlocher, 800, 2:16.98.

Jason Baerlochers won the men’s 1,500 in 3:53.34. EWU’s other men’s winners were Patrick Williams, 400, 48.10; Mike Dwyer, 110 hurdles, 14.75; Andre Ervin, high jump, 6-11; Elondrus Lee, long jump, 22-8-1/2; and Jay Martell, shot put, 51-3/4. Eastern’s men also won the 400 and 1,600 relays.

In non-Division I scoring, the Community Colleges of Spokane men and women topped North Idaho, Whitworth and Gonzaga.

North Idaho College’s Derek Woodske won the men’s hammer in 189-2. Christine Amertil took the women’s 400 in 58.00.
