Belitz Fans Dozen As Cougars Split

Left-hander Todd Belitz struck out a career-high 12 batters Sunday while pitching Washington State University to a 13-5 victory over Portland State in the second game of a Pac-10 North doubleheader at Portland.

Brian Maddox went the distance as the host Vikings won the seven-inning opener 4-2.

Belitz walked only two and worked the first eight innings as WSU improved its season record to 6-33. Jesse Hoorelbeke and Justin Mentink backed Belitz with home runs. Horrelbeke belted a three-run shot in the first inning. Mentink’s blast came in the fourth inning, also with two runners on base.

Back-to-back doubles by Jason Hairston and Shawn Stevenson, plus Scott Randall’s run-scoring single had given WSU a 2-1 lead after three innings of the first game. However, Portland State (9-29) tied the game in the fourth inning and the Vikings took the lead on Darren Case’s RBI single in the fifth.

The teams will make up Saturday’s game, postponed by rain, when PSU visits WSU at Pullman this weekend. Doubleheaders have been scheduled for Friday and Saturday with a single game Sunday.

Santa Clara made the most of seven hits, six walks and a hit batter to shut out Gonzaga 8-0 in a West Coast Conference game at Santa Clara, Calif.

The Broncos (24-16) broke a scoreless tie with six runs in the fifth inning, then tacked on two more in the seventh, sending the Bulldogs to their 24th defeat to go with 15 victories and a tie.

Gonzaga collected only five hits, all of them singles, off two Santa Clara pitchers.

Jack Arthaud and Alex Schuerman were the batting stars as Whitworth College remained in the the title race by defeating Pacific University 9-5 and 5-4 in an NCIC doubleheader at Forest Grove, Ore.

Arthaud drove in three runs with a single and a double, and the Pirates used a six-run second inning to win the opener. In the nightcap, Schuerman had four hits, including a game-winning solo home run in the 10th inning.

The Pirates (11-15, 9-2) and the Boxers will make up Saturday’s postponed game at 11:30 a.m. today.

NAIA poll leader Lewis-Clark State College (34-6-1), which saw its 21-game winning streak stopped earlier in the weekend, thumped Southern Utah 11-7 behind unbeaten left-hander Adam Huxhold (5-0).

Softball

After picking up three victories earlier in the day, Community Colleges of Spokane dropped a 6-0 decision to Clackamas Community College in the championship game of the NWAACC Crossover Tournament at Yakima.

The Sasquatch (18-7), led by Stephanie Shelton, who had seven hits and eight stolen bases in the tournament, defeated SW Oregon 8-1, Edmonds CC 2-0 and Mt. Hood CC 4-0.

Auto racing

After weather washed out numerous regional stockcar events Saturday, Spokane Raceway Park was able to sneak in its program on a windy afternoon Sunday.

Jerry Wallace won his second main event in as many tries in Street Stocks. Mark Resen in Pro Eliminator and Elden Hallock in Street Eliminator rebounded from runner-up finishes two weeks ago to post their first bracket drag racing wins this season.

The NASCAR REB-CO Northwest Tour race in Portland was rescheduled for May 23. And for a second straight week, Stateline Speedway lost its racing program.
