Twin Falls Commissioner To Lead Juvenile Corrections Agency

Associated Press

Brent Reinke, chairman of the Twin Falls County commissioners, has been appointed director of the Department of Juvenile Corrections by Gov. Phil Batt.

In announcing the appointment Tuesday, the governor called Reinke a fiscal conservative and consensus builder who works well with others.

“Brent Reinke has vision and enthusiasm and he will serve Idaho well,” the governor said in a prepared statement.

Former legislator Michael Johnson was the first director of an agency created less than two years ago to draw together all agencies and jurisdictions dealing with juvenile offenders. Johnson resigned in February after questions about his part in incidents involving two associates.

Reinke was chosen from 29 applicants and starts his new job May 12. He’s been active in efforts to upgrade juvenile justice programs in the Magic Valley.

As commissioner, Reinke spearheaded needed changes, serving as chairman of the Juvenile Justice Regional Council. He also pushed programs to fight child abuse and domestic violence.

Before joining the Twin Falls County Commission, Reinke served on the Filer City Council 1986-94. He also owned and operated restaurants and worked in the food service industry for nearly a quarter century.

He said he would continue the state’s balanced approach to juvenile programs.

“We will hold juvenile offenders and families accountable while assisting offenders in becoming productive members of society,” Reinke said. “We also will develop partnerships with counties, courts, law enforcement, educators, the Department of Health and Welfare, private providers and the local community. It’s going to be a collaborative process.”
