The National Guard was called in Tuesday to protect the town after the police station was heavily damaged by a tornado and six businesses were destroyed.

The Guard arrived with military vehicles after the tornado touched down about 4 p.m.

Six businesses were destroyed and eight were heavily damaged, said Rita Adrian, of the DeKalb County Emergency Management agency. The Red Cross reported 40 to 50 homes damaged.

Earlier Tuesday, University of Alabama police at Tuscaloosa said a tree blew onto an unoccupied car.
