Ferris Boys, Girls Win Golf Matches

Annette Griffus Correspondent

The Ferris Saxons boys and girls teams came away with victories in Greater Spokane League golf matches Monday at Liberty Lake Golf Course.

Reid Hatley shot an even-par 70 as the Saxons finished with a score of 369. Central Valley was second at 382, and Lewis and Clark had 391.

Medalist Bridget Johnson finished three over par with a 77, helping the Saxons’ girls team (430) top Lewis and Clark (509) and Central Valley (517).

“You hate to get beat, but the league is so great,” said Bob Lobdell, Lewis and Clark’s golf coach.

LC’s Jeremy Kuhlmann kept up with Hatley and finished with a 71. Lobdell is pleased with his team’s consistency so far.

Kuhlmann, Jeff Wilson and Peter Denton have been scoring consistently in the 70s this season, which bodes well for any team as state qualifying nears. Only eight boys and eight girls can qualify from the GSL.

“(That) is a travesty, because we have 20 boys and 20 girls who could go,” he said.

Lobdell hopes to see two of his players, Mike McCurdy and No. 1 Tricia Bassett, compete for the state tournament. Bassett played at state last year as a sophomore.

Track and field

Medical Lake defeated Colfax 81-59 in a Northeast A League meet last Thursday. Freshman Emery Meeks won the 110-high hurdles in 16.8 seconds. Steve LaForce, a junior, won the discus with a throw of 135 feet, 7 inches.

“Steve’s coming along really well,” said Cardinals track coach John Giannandrea.

Medical Lake is loaded with freshmen and juniors this year but the remaining seniors and juniors have contributed well with leadership, especially the senior girls, said Giannandrea.

Other individual finishers include Duffy Haggerty, who won the javelin with a throw of 126-4, and senior Vince Moore, who won the shot put with a throw of 39-9-1/2.

Sophomore Hung Nguyn won the triple jump with a distance of 35-9-1/2, and Ty McConnell cleared 9-0 to win the pole vault. Sophomore Brandon Fuqua set a personal best in the 400 by breaking the 53-second mark.

Ferris’ Isaac Hawkins won the 1,600 meter race at the Pasco Invitational last Saturday in 4:15.78. On the girls side, Jennifer Smith of Ferris set a meet record of 4:58.92 to win the 1,600. The earlier mark was set by Brigid Sterling in 1986 with a time of 14:58.92.

Saxon Emily Hawkins finished third in the 3,200 meter in 11:23.46.

Hawkins had traveled to the Arcadia (Calif) Invitational last Wednesday and won the 3,200 meter with a time of 58.47. Saxon Missy Blackshire finished 14th in the 800 with a time of 2:19.61, and teammate Emily Hawkins finished 15th in the 3,200 meter in 11:14.54.

Soccer

Cheney continued its winning ways by defeating Medical Lake 4-1 last Saturday on the soccer field.

Nick Reynolds scored his 17th goal of the season and is on the verge of taking over the league record of 18. Reynolds also assisted on Nate Gosse’s goal.

Ryan Waller finished the scoring for the Blackhawks (7-1-0, 21 points) and Andy John had the lone goal for the Cardinals.

On Thursday, Cheney beat West Valley 2-1 as Reynolds and Eric Hegney each scored.
