Playfair Plans Date To Open Off-Track Site

Playfair Race Course could open as an off-track betting outlet May 1.

That’s the target set Tuesday by director of racing Ted Martin, who hopes to offer full programs from Hollywood Park, Golden Gate Fields, Lone Star Park, Churchill Downs and Emerald Downs.

The state racing commission meets Tuesday at the Sea-Tac Red Lion. On the agenda is consideration of simulcast wagering policies, including approval of race cards to be imported under the state’s new simulcast wagering law.

GU crew ranked

Gonzaga University broke into the top six for the varsity eight and varsity four boats in the inaugural NCAA women’s crew regional rankings.

Gonzaga’s varsity eight ranks sixth in the West region behind five Pacific-10 Conference schools. The Bulldogs edged fourth-ranked Washington State by .37 seconds on Long Lake in Gonzaga’s first spring race. The Gonzaga varsity four is ranked second behind the University of Washington.

The rankings, based on results through April 15, do not include GU’s sweep in the West Coast Conference championships. GU’s varsity eight, junior varsity eight and novice eight all won inaugural WCC championships. After the sweep, Gonzaga coach Susie Lueck was named WCC women’s co-coach of the year.

Cougs last in Pac-10

Washington State’s women’s golf team finished last in the Pac-10 Championships Wednesday at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. The Cougars finished with a three-round total of 961, 16 strokes behind No. 9 Cal. Arizona rallied in the third round to pass Arizona State for the team title with a score of 867.

Stanford’s Mhairi McKay was the medalist with a three-round total of 207. Anne Marvin was the top WSU finisher at 238, tied for 36th place among 50 golfers.

Gonzaga-WSU rained out

Gonzaga University’s baseball game at Washington State Wednesday in Pullman was rained out. The teams are tentatively scheduled to play Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. GU’s scheduled Tuesday game with Lewis-Clark State has been canceled.
