Lc Perks Up, Beats Cda

Jonathan Hay Correspondent

Although it looked like his team was losing control of the game, Lake City High boys soccer coach Jim Facciano felt his visiting Timberwolves had the Coeur d’Alene Vikings right where they wanted them.

Facciano hoped Coeur d’Alene’s intense play at the beginning of the second half would wake up the stagnant T-Wolves. That’s what happened.

Lake City’s Brent Wolf scored his second goal of the game with 12 minutes remaining, and Brian Landers followed with one of his own 2 minutes later to cap off a 4-2 victory.

“When they tied it up, I knew our intensity had to pick up and the guys responded,” Facciano said.

After an opening ceremony during which bagpipers led the players onto the field, LC struck quickly. Dan Clark scored less than a minute into the game, giving the T-Wolves a 1-0 lead.

Although Lake City dominated the rest of the first half, neither team scored.

A crowd of 200, one of the season’s largest, braved a driving rainstorm to watch an exciting second half.

Coeur d’Alene’s Kyle Chambers tied the game at 1-1 on a high blast from about 40 feet over the outstretched hands of Lake City goaltender Erik Morris at the 52-minute mark.

“We played well early in the second half,” CdA coach John Smith said. “In order to give ourselves a chance to win, we were keeping the ball on the ground because LC is too physical to put the ball in the air.”

The T-Wolves pulled ahead on Wolf’s first goal. Wolf blasted a direct kick through a wall of Vikings who appeared to block the view of goalkeeper Barret Schwerrin. The Vikings answered quickly, though, as Ty Kovatch made an outstanding header on a Darren Baune corner kick to tie the game at 2-2. That was the wake-up call Facciano was looking for.

“We had to pick up the pace and start putting goals in the net to take them out of the game,” Wolf said.

He scored the go-ahead goal after Schwerrin failed to wrap up a shot by LC’s Bo Conley. Wolf took the loose ball and buried it in the lower-right corner of the net from about 10 feet.

Landers finished the scoring with a shot that curled into the left side of the goal from about 30 feet.

The triumph improved Lake City’s record to 8-0-2 in North Idaho Soccer League play. The T-Wolves can clinch the regular-season title with a victory at Sandpoint on Wednesday. Coeur d’Alene fell to 6-2-2 with both losses to LC.

Smith said that he doesn’t think he’ll change his plans if the two meet in the North Idaho Cup, but his team must execute like they did early in the second half.

“Their defense is big strong and composed,” Smith said. “They’re fun to watch, but I’m just sorry that it came at our expense.”
