Arkansas Continues Penn Relays Streak

Associated Press

A masterful anchor leg by Seneca Lassiter carried Arkansas’ men to victory in the distance medley relay Friday in the Penn Relays for the sixth time in seven years and the 10th in 13 years.

Meanwhile, Villanova’s women won a second distance relay in two days, taking the 6,000 in 17:29.32.

Louisiana State extended its domination in the women’s 400 relay, winning for the third consecutive year and fifth time in seven years.

Georgetown, thanks to a 1:45.5 anchor by Bryan Woodward, won the men’s sprint medley relay for the first time since 1927 with a clocking of 3:14.79. Texas, which won the first three women’s sprint medley relay championships from 1988-90, regained the title in 3:44.37, as anchor runner Dana Riley ran 2:05.3 for 800 meters. The first two legs are 200 meters and the third leg is 400 meters.

In the day’s most sensational race, Oklahoma’s Edward Clarke dropped the baton on the opening leg of qualifying for the men’s 1,600-meter relay and fell 30 meters behind the field. But the Sooners, aided by Roxbert Martin’s sizzling 44.2 anchor, won their heat in 3:07.94 and qualified for today’s final.
