After 30-Hour Standoff, Man Apparently Kills Self

Associated Press

A man who holed up in a motel room, letting his little boy go and then keeping police at bay for more than 30 hours, apparently killed himself with a gunshot, officials said.

Brian Anthony Blair, 22, had been wanted in Colorado since he escaped from a halfway house in 1993.

Police stormed the room late Friday and found Blair in the bathtub with a gunshot wound to the head, said Police Chief John Powell.

Police went to the Quality Inn in north Cheyenne Thursday morning after receiving a tip from Colorado authorities, and Blair let his 3-year-old son leave the room soon afterward, Powell said.

Police would not say why the boy was with him. The boy’s mother - Blair’s estranged wife - was en route from her New Mexico home. Police would not give their names.

“He told officers he was armed and he was not going to give himself up,” Powell said at a news conference.

“He indicated to us that he was not going back to where he came from.”

On Friday night, Powell said, “a decision was made to put gas into his room in an attempt to get him to surrender.”

Police refused Saturday to release any more details.
