Mark Tate of Canton, Mich., drove the Close Call to a top speed of 148.402 mph in the second day of qualifying for the Molson Dry Thunderfest hydroplane race.

Mark Evans of Wenatchee, in the PICO American Dream, the defending Thunderfest winner, had the second-fastest qualifying time (145.746 mph) on gusty Okanogan Lake. John Watkins of Federal Way, Wash., in the Miss Molson Dry, was third (144.858 mph).
