John Hricsina won his sixth PBA senior title, and $20,000, beating Don Johnson 220-206 in the Senior Showboat Invitational in Las Vegas.

Hricsina, the 1990 senior player of the year, had a 17-pin lead with two frames to go, but left a difficult 3-9-10 spare in the ninth. Johnson needed two strikes and five pins to claim the title, but fell short when he left a solid 10-pin with the first ball in the 10th frame.

American Eric Bergoust won the second round of the freestyle skiing World Cup in Mount Buller, Australia, with a stunning second jump.

Bergoust, from Missoula, Mont., earned 129.94 points for his second jump, a quadruple-twist triple back somersault to total 242.53 and beat teammate Britt Swartley.

Boxing trainer Alex Sherer, who worked with IBF heavyweight champion Michael Moorer and former champions Thomas Hearns and Jorge Paez, has died in Los Angeles of an airborne fungal disease that affected his lungs. He was 42.

Sherer, who had been training undefeated heavyweight Ed Mahone, started his career at the famed Kronk Gym in Detroit. He moved to Southern California in 1991. He is survived by his wife, Diana, and a 7-month-old son.
