Touch Gold, ridden by Chris McCarron, followed his Belmont Stakes victory with a win over Anet, Silver Charm’s stablemate, in the $1 million Haskell Invitational Handicap at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

Awesome Again, ridden by Mike Smith, pulled away to a three-length victory over Glitman in the $250,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga in New York. Awesome Again was making only his fourth career start, but came away with his third straight victory.

Expelled, a 23-1 longshot trained by Hall of Famer Robert Frankel, set a slow early pace under jockey Julio Garcia, and went on to a length victory in the $300,000 Eddie Read Handicap at Del Mar, Calif., as 3-5 favorite Merlin wound up third.

Bob Cope, 60, former defensive coordinator for the Kansas State University football team, died of cancer in Manhattan, Kan. He was diagnosed with cancer last September.
