N. Korea To Return Americans’ Remains

The remains of several American soldiers killed nearly 47 years ago in the Korean War are scheduled to be returned from North Korea today, a U.S. official said.

The United States was given access to North Korea, a reclusive communist nation, a year and a half ago.

“My indication is that we’re going to get multiple sets of remains, four or five,” J. Alan Liotto, a Defense Department official, said Sunday.

The remains are to be returned in a ceremony at Panmunjom, a neutral village in the demilitarized zone that has separated North and South Korea since their three-year war ended in a truce in 1953.

Liotto said the remains were recovered from an area about 20 miles south of the Chinese border where about 350 Americans are thought to have been killed in combat in October 1950.
