Fire Near Clarkston Nearly Under Control

From Staff And Wire Reports

Firefighters had an Eastern Washington wildfire corralled Monday, but did not yet have the blaze under control.

“They’re gaining on it,” Asotin County Fire Chief Herman Eiting said.

The lightning-sparked fire has burned about 10,000 acres - mostly private grassland - since firefighters got the call Saturday. No injuries had been reported and no homes had been damaged, Eiting said.

About 225 firefighters from the State Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service and five Washington counties were working the blaze about eight miles west of this city on the Washington-Idaho border. Benton, Spokane, Walla Walla and Grant counties all contributed manpower to help battle the fire.
