Rookie Livan Hernandez won his sixth straight game with 7-1/3 strong innings and Bobby Bonilla drove in three runs with a homer and single as the Florida Marlins beat the Houston Astros 4-1 on Monday night in Miami.
The 22-year-old Cuban defector became the first pitcher in the Marlins’ five-year history to win his first six decisions. He allowed four hits and struck out four before Jay Powell got the final five outs.
The Marlins, who ended the Astros’ seven-game road winning streak, beat Houston for the 14th time in their last 16 meetings at Pro Player Stadium.
Astros rookie Chris Holt (7-8) was the loser - his seventh straight start without a win.
Giants 9, Reds 1
Cincinnati
J.T. Snow drove in a career-high five runs with a pair of homers, powering San Francisco to a victory over Cincinnati.
Kirk Rueter (8-5) allowed one run on seven hits in seven innings to improve to 4-0 in six career starts against the Reds.
Brian Johnson had a solo homer, his fifth, and an RBI single as the Giants pulled to a 4-1 lead against Giovanni Carrara (0-1), who was called up to fill out a rotation thinned by injuries.
Braves 6, Pirates 0
Pittsburgh
Andruw Jones returned from his first day off in 1-1/2 months and hit a two-run homer, backing John Smoltz’s second shutout of the season as Atlanta beat Pittsburgh.
Smoltz (10-9) pitched a four-hitter.
Pirates starter Steve Cooke (8-11) limited Atlanta to a lone run and three hits until falling apart in the sixth.
Mets 4, Cardinals 2
New York
Lance Johnson hit a pair of RBI triples and Rick Reed (10-4) won his fourth straight start, leading New York over St. Louis.
Johnson went 3 for 4 and Reed doubled and scored as the Mets opened an eight-game homestand. Mark McGwire was hitless in four at-bats, dropping him to 1 for 13 since joining St. Louis, as the Cardinals lost for the sixth time in eight games.
Phillies 7, Rockies 3
Philadelphia
Tyler Green pitched seven solid innings for his second straight win and Scott Rolen hit a two-run homer to lead Philadelphia to a win over Colorado.
Hall of Fame game
Eric Anthony had three home runs and six RBIs to key a 21-hit attack as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 16-8 Monday in the Hall of Fame exhibition game in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Billy Ashley added two homers for Los Angeles and the teams combined for nine homers and 31 hits.
The Padres roughed up Dodgers starter Ramon Martinez for five hits and four earned runs in three innings. Martinez was making his third rehabilitation start as he tries to bounce back from rotator cuff injury.
Fan stabbed after game
A man was stabbed outside Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh after Monday night’s game between the Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates, police said.
The man was in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital and his alleged attacker was in police custody, according to a supervisor at the city’s emergency dispatch center.
Police did not immediately provide identities for either the victim or his accused attacker.
The stabbing occurred outside Gate A as fans were leaving the stadium following the Braves’ 6-0 victory.
Emergency personnel worked on a man, possibly in his 20s, who was shirtless and on his back in video footage obtained by KDKA-TV.
“Somebody trying to sell something came and knifed him right in his face,” an unidentified woman told the television station.
Clearing the bases
