Local Residents Honored For Improving Life Quality
Four Spokane residents were among 13 recipients statewide to receive Evergreen Awards presented by Washington’s Attorney General and Secretary of State for helping improve the quality of life in Washington state and beyond.
The awards went to:
Sandra Buss, a neighborhood activist who has inspired others to become more active and informed on land-use and other planning issues.
Nancy and Ed Owen of the North Hill Neighborhood Patrol for their administrative detail which allowed others to concentrate volunteer efforts on activities that contribute directly to a safer neighborhood.
Kathy Thamm, Family Services Planner and Northwest Regional Facilitators of Spokane, for designing and developing a child-care demonstration project which meets the current needs of families and provides training for future services.
Clayton Robinson was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. and received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering when he graduated this spring from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Robinson of Medical Lake.
Nicholas Jabara, son of James and Linda Jabara, has accepted an appointment to the Air Force Academy. He also received the President’s Award for academic Excellence, is a Washington State Honors Award recipient and a member of the National Honor Society. He is a 1997 graduate of Gonzaga Preparatory School.
Three Spokane residents earned a spot on the Dean’s List for the spring semester at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind.
The students, their class standing and parents are:
Benjamin Allen, freshman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen.
Robert Dirks, freshman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Dirks.
Clay Laughary, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Laughary, who graduated with a degree in mathematics.
Elizabeth Haight was named an Honor Teacher at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. The award is presented to student teachers who show exceptional initiative, scholarship and excellence in the classroom. She is the daughter of Joe Haight and Micky McCormick, both of Spokane.
Crystal Waterman, daughter of Tom and Jan Susemihl of Spokane, received a B.S. degree from the University of Colorado’s School of Pharmacy in Denver, Colo.
