Montell Griffin, a 5-foot-7 stump from Chicago, and Roy Jones Jr., an always cocky, sometimes rude whirlwind from Pensacola, Fla., will clash in one of the biggest boxing events in Connecticut history at Mashantucket tonight. Griffin will attempt to justify the World Boxing Council light-heavyweight title he took from Jones in March. … The 9-year-old son of David O’Brien, the athletic director at Temple University, was killed Tuesday in a two-vehicle accident that also left O’Brien’s wife and another son in critical condition. The A.D. was not in the vehicle.

Mississippi State begins football practice this week mourning Keffer McGee, the star running back who drowned in an apartment complex swimming pool about a mile from campus. … Ravi DeSilva, the longtime coach of the Missoula Strikers and the head coach at Sentinel High School, has been accused of sexually abusing a child during a drunken night with three teenage boys in a soccer camp dormitory on the University of Montana campus.

Gerald Wilkins, who has averaged nearly 14 points over 11 NBA seasons, re-signed with the Orlando Magic. … Free-agent forward David Benoit, who missed last season with a ruptured right Achilles’ tendon, has re-signed with the New Jersey Nets.
