Go On A Garden Tour, Eat Some Ice Cream

From Staff And Wire Reports

If you’re looking for a reason to drive through the Palouse this summer we have one: The annual Latah County Historical Society Home and Garden Tour and Ice Cream Social is Aug. 17.

The three buildings on the tour - all in Moscow, Idaho, - offer varied perspectives on that farming/ university town’s history.

And, of course the yards at each site will be open for strolling. There will also be four other gardens to tour. Ice cream and fruit parfaits will be served at the McConnell Mansion.

The tour runs 1-4 p.m. with ice cream served 3-5 p.m. Tickets for the tour and ice cream social are $12, $10 for members of the historical society, or $20 for a family of parents and children. The ice cream social alone is $2. Tickets are available in Moscow at the McConnell Mansion, 110 S. Adams, Centennial Annex, 327 E. Second and at the Saturday Farmers Market.

On the day of the tour, tickets are available at the mansion beginning at 12:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit the historical society. For information, call (208) 882-1004.

Energy landscaping

Take a close look at your landscaping if your home’s energy bills seem high. Careful selection and positioning of plants will control heat loss or gain and their costs.

Experts say deciduous trees are ideal for energy landscaping since they provide shade during the warmest months but allow the sun to reach and warm a house in winter, cutting heating costs.

And, while we’re talking energy: If you have an extra refrigerator or freezer in the garage, consider unplugging it or using it only when necessary. Such appliances use more energy to keep food and beverages cold when placed in an uncooled area, the Peco Energy Co. says.
