Holt Winds Up In Fourth Place

Kristi Larsen of Rio Rancho, N.M., finished with a 75 Thursday for a three-day winning total of 229, leaving Spokane’s Britney Holt, the second-round co-leader, fourth as the Polo Golf Southwestern Junior Classic came to an end at Albuquerque, N.M.

Holt carded an 80 for a total of 234, tying her with Jennifer James of Edmond, Okla.

Bridget Johnson of Spokane shot a 78, her best round of the tournament, for a total of 238 as the state of Washington finished eighth and Mexico won the Girls Junior America’s Cup at Evanston, Wyo.

Defending champion Darren Slackman of Spokane shot a 68 to move into a four-way tie for sixth place at 141 after two rounds of the Washington State Amateur at Bremerton.

Craig Welty of Burlington shot his second straight 68 and took a one-stroke lead with a total of 136.

Kyle Kelly of Spokane is among six players at 143.

Volleyball

Although she faltered in Wednesday’s victory over Germany at Winnipeg, Manitoba, University of Notre Dame senior hitter Jaimie Lee was named most valuable player for the U.S. World University Games team Tuesday in its Canada Cup loss to Hungary.

A graduate of Spokane’s Ferris High School, Lee turned in team-best totals of 14 kills and 12 digs while hitting .300 against Hungary.

Wednesday, the U.S. downed Germany in five sets, but Lee had only four kills with two errors from 15 attempts.

Track and Field

Rick Rojas of Spokane won the 5,000-meter run for men ages 45-49 with a 16:53.9 clocking at the National Masters Track and Field Championships at San Jose CC in San Jose, Calif.

Softball

Spokane Nitro paraded 15 runs across the plate in the first inning and went on to defeat the Colorado Springs Black Jacks 22-1 in the first round of the American Softball Association’s 14-and-under girls western area championships at Evanston, Wyo.

Winning pitcher Jessica Murray contributed three hits and recorded five strikeouts in the game, which was limited to five innings by the mercy rule.

Tara Malmquist also had three hits for the Nitros, who played their second game late Thursday night.
