Warren, Blades To Miss San Francisco Exhibition

Seattle running back Chris Warren and receiver Brian Blades will sit out Saturday night’s preseason game against San Francisco, Seahawks coach Dennis Erickson said Thursday.

Warren has bruised ribs and Blades has an ailing right knee. Both injuries occurred in last Saturday’s preseason game against Phoenix.

Cornerback Dexter Seigler (hamstring) and safety Jay Bellamy (hamstring) are expected to play.

Erickson also said the first team will play in the first half Saturday.

No. 3 draft pick Shawn Springs will make his debut, playing the first quarter as a first nickleback and the second quarter at cornerback. No. 6 draft pick Walter Jones will rotate with three other offensive tackles.

Erickson said the quarterback rotation “pretty much will be the same.”

“(John) Friesz will take three or four series, depending on the flow of the game and Warren (Moon) will come in and do the same thing,” Erickson said.

Jon Kitna and Gino Torretta will finish, in that order.

A little help from dad

Bob Bratkowski, the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, had company the first 2-1/2 weeks of training camp.

But it certainly wasn’t someone who doesn’t know his way around the football field.

Bob’s father, Zeke, was at Cheney as an observer. The elder Bratkowski, a former NFL quarterback, retired in 1996 after 43 years in the league. His most recent job was as an offensive assistant to former New York Jets head coach Rich Kotite.

However, he’ll always be remembered as Bart Starr’s backup from 1963-68, the Packers’ glory years under Vince Lombardi.

“He’s seen a lot of different ways of doing things,” said Bob Bratkowski, 41, who has been with the Seahawks for six seasons. “He helped me. He gave some suggestions to Dennis (Erickson).”

The elder Bratkowski, 65, was in Seattle Saturday for the preseason game against the Cardinals. He has since returned home to Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Loving life on the Palouse

The younger Bratkowski, a wide receiver at Washington State from 1975-77, couldn’t be happier about the Seahawks’ return to Cheney.

“I love it,” he said. “It reminds me of my days back in college down in the Palouse. The wheat fields, the warm dry climate.”

Bratkowski has had other visitors in Cheney, including WSU coach Mike Price. The two are close friends.

The Seahawks will have a light workout today before flying to San Francisco for Saturday’s 6 p.m. game.
