Justice’s Homers Carry Indians

Associated Press

David Justice hit two solo home runs Saturday evening, leading the Cleveland Indians over the Texas Rangers 4-2 for a split of their day-night doubleheader in Cleveland.

The Rangers won the opener 4-3 behind the pitching of Terry Clark, claimed Tuesday on waivers from Cleveland.

In the second game, Jose Mesa earned his first save since April 24 as the Indians rebounded to end a five-game losing streak, their longest since May 1994. The first-game defeat was their sixth consecutive home loss, their worst skid since Jacobs Field opened in 1994.

Justice homered in the fourth and seventh innings.

Angels 4, Orioles 3 Anaheim, Calif.

Darin Erstad snapped an eighth-inning tie with a two-out RBI single and Dave Hollins doubled in two more insurance runs as Anaheim defeated Baltimore.

Chuck Finley won his ninth straight start for the Angels, who moved a half-game ahead of Seattle in the A.L. West.

Athletics 3, Brewers 2 Oakland, Calif.

Ernie Young doubled in pinch-runner Tilson Brito to break an eighth-inning tie and lead Oakland past Milwaukee.

Royals 9, Red Sox 2 Boston

Dean Palmer’s two-run single capped Kansas City’s biggest inning of the season - an eight-run fourth - as the Royals defeated Boston.

Rookie left-hander Glendon Rusch (4-8), who had lost his last six decisions and was winless in his last eight starts, allowed six hits with one walk and six strikeouts in his first career complete game.

Tigers 3, Blue Jays 2 Toronto

Detroit won its 54th game, surpassing last season’s total, as Tony Clark had three hits.

The Tigers had the worst record in the majors last year at 53-109.

Scott Sanders (4-9) snapped his three-game losing streak, allowing two runs and two hits.

Yankees 4, Twins 1 Minneapolis

Brad Radke’s winning streak ended at 12 consecutive starts when Luis Sojo doubled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, sending New York past Minnesota.

Radke, one of only three pitchers since 1950 to win 12 straight starts, had his streak snapped one win short of matching Ellis Kinder’s 13-game run in 1949.

The A.L. record for consecutive victories is 16, held by four players.

Schoolboy Rowe was the last to do it in 1934. The modern major league record is 19 by Rube Marquard in 1912.

Clearing the bases

Baltimore signed its first-round draft pick, outfielder Darnell McDonald. … Oakland placed outfielder Jose Canseco on the disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 1, with lower back spasms. Canseco is 142 plate appearances short of a clause automatically renewing his contract for 1998.
