Congressman Guilty Of Illegal Fund Raising

Compiled From Wire Services

After years of denials, U.S. Rep. Jay Kim and his wife pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges they accepted and hid $230,000 in illegal campaign contributions.

The three-term Republican congressman could get up to three years in prison, and his wife, June, could get two years when they are sentenced Oct. 23.

Kim, 58, who became the nation’s first Korean-born congressman when he was elected to the House in 1992, publicly denied guilt since 1993. He acknowledged accepting thousands in illegal corporate donations, accepting a $50,000 loan from a Taiwanese citizen that later made its way to his election effort and contributing $83,248 from his engineering firm to his campaign.
