Denise Hartley Earns Multiple Awards

Denise Hartley has earned honor upon honor this year.

This spring, the daughter of Larry and Diane Hartley, graduated salutatorian from Central Valley High School.

She also earned an Academic Letter at CV, the Honor Award of the Society of Women Engineers and a National Merit Scholarship as a Commended Scholar. She was nominated for the Superintendent’s Award and was among the top 1 percent of Washington State high school students.

Hartley then received the University of Southern California Dean’s Scholarship and Presidential Academic Award, Washington State University’s Achievement Award, and the University of Washington’s Undergraduate Scholar Award, which she will use to study pre-med there this fall.

James Carney, valedictorian for the 1995 graduating class of Central Valley High School, was awarded the Albers School of Business and Economics’ Outstanding Sophomore Scholar at Seattle University.

Last year, Carney, majoring in economics and French, was the Outstanding Freshman Scholar. He maintains a 3.96 grade-point average and will advise freshman business majors next year.

He is the son of Tom and Debbie Carney.

Katelyn Allers, a 1996 Lewis and Clark High School graduate, was awarded a $6,000 Presidential Scholarship for Academic Achievement from Whitworth College, where she is a sophomore. She also received two $1,000 awards in physics and mathematics, and a $1,500 Music Talent Scholarship.

Allers is the daughter of James and Tracey Allers.

Air Force AirmanThomas Palmer Jr., son of Tom and Cindy Palmer of Spokane, graduated from the security apprentice course at the Air Force Security Police Academy at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Brenda Rich, Spokane, received a $600 agricultural studies scholarship from the Cenex Foundation. She is an agriculture major at Spokane Community College.

Several Inland Northwest students were among the 75 at Washington State University to receive the President’s Award for exceptional leadership and service to the university and the community.

Oliver Bangera, political science, son of Theodore Bangera; Deedra Hayden, human development/elementary education, daughter of Carroll and Janice Hayden; and Christopher Knaus, intercultural communication, all of Pullman: Jill Busse, elementary education/special education, daughter of Larry and Bonnie Busse; Juanita DeRyan, working towards a master’s degree in health policy and administration, daughter of Sarah DeRyan; Traci Molett, business management, daughter of L.C. and Sandra Molett; Michele Turner, communications/public relations, daughter of Timothy and Joanne Turner; and Charlotte Yeomans, biochemistry/Spanish, daughter of Linda Yeomans, all of Spokane.

Donna Peterson of Spokane, daughter of the late Harry and Darolyn Peterson, graduated this spring from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, R.I., with an associate degree in science and a major in finance and investment.

Two Ferris high school graduates attending RandolphMacon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Va., were named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester: Sherry Wilson, daughter of Darlene Johnson, and Bethanie Moeller, daughter of Jim and Cathie Moeller.
