Dollar Hits 3-Week Low Vs. Mark

The dollar dropped to a 3-week low against the mark and fell sharply in most other dealings Wednesday on resurgent talk of a delay in Europe’s single currency and new evidence that interest rates in Germany and Japan may rise.

Volatility in U.S. securities prices also helped undermine the dollar, which has been closely tracking the behavior of the American stock and bond markets since the Dow Jones industrial average tumbled last Friday.

“We had a wild day today, with some massive buying of marks,” said Tom Hoge, vice president at the Bank of New York.
