Two Teens Arrested For Burglarizing Apartment

Two Valley teenagers were arrested for burglary early Saturday morning, just hours after showing up at an apartment where an acquaintance was baby-sitting and asking to borrow two pairs of rubber gloves.

Late Friday night, according to Sheriff’s deputies, the boys, ages 16 and 17, knocked on the screen door of an apartment on South Whipple Road. They asked the girl who was baby-sitting there for two pairs of rubber gloves. The girl gave them the gloves, then went to answer the phone.

At about 1 a.m., the pair returned, broke the glass in the screen door and grabbed at her through the door. She slammed the apartment door shut and locked it.

Soon after, a witness who had noticed the oddly dressed youths standing outside the window of an apartment in the same building called police. Deputies arrived to find the apartment burglarized. They went to the suspects’ homes and after a short chase, arrested them.

Women arrested after mall incident

Sheriff’s deputies arrested two women Aug. 5 after a shoplifter and her companion fled from the Spokane Valley Mall with perfume stolen from The Bon Marche.

A security officer at The Bon said he saw a woman put a bottle of perfume into her purse and then leave the store without paying. He followed her outside and found her with another woman. When he confronted them about the perfume, the shoplifter began resisting while the other woman walked away, returning a few minutes later in a car. The shoplifter ran to the car and the two sped away.

Store employees called Crime Check to report the incident. A short time later, sheriff’s deputies arrested two women near Trent and Pines.

Lawanda R. Hopkins, 45, of 922 S. Cowley, was booked into the Spokane County Jail on charges of second-degree robbery and unlawful possession of prescription drugs, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

Jamie M. Robinson, 34, a transient, was charged with second-degree robbery and possession of a controlled substance.

Deputies said they discovered a bag of what appeared to be powdered cocaine in a fanny pack with Robinson’s identification. They said they found a bottle of prescription medication not belonging to Hopkins in her purse.

Officers also found clothing items and several additional bottles of perfume, all apparently stolen, in the car.

Computers stolen from church

Burglars took $12,000 worth of computer equipment last week from Redeemer Lutheran Church.

The church superintendent found the building’s southwest door ajar when he arrived at work on the morning of Aug. 5. The office of the church at 3606 S. Schafer Road had been ransacked and several computers, monitors and printers were missing. The burglars had stacked two VCRs and two large speakers by an exit, but left them behind.

Screens on several windows had been cut, including a second story window through which the burglars apparently gained entry. Two interior doors also had been pried off their hinges.

No arrests have been made.
