Agassi Finally Falls

Andre Agassi’s strong performance at the RCA Championships in Indianapolis came to an end with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 quarterfinal loss to unseeded Mark Woodforde of Australia.

Agassi, seeded 14th, couldn’t recover from Woodforde’s 19 aces and strong forehand.

In other matches, No. 5 Carlos Moya of Spain and No. 9 Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden advanced. Moya defeated Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic 6-3, 7-5. Bjorkman defeated his former doubles partner Tommy Ho of Houston 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. No. 10 Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, the 1995 RCA champion, outlasted 16th seed Magnus Larsson of Sweden 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (12-10).

Petr Korda, on the verge of becoming another upset victim of unseeded David Wheaton, fended off three break points and four match points to advance to the semifinals of the Pilot Pen International in New Haven, Conn.

Korda, the No. 5 seed, rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 win and will face top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who outlasted No. 7 seed Tim Henman of Britain 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Britain’s Greg Rusedski, the No. 11 seed, edged No. 4 seed Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 and will play No. 8 seed Patrick Rafter, of Australia, who advanced with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 win over No. 2 seed Sergi Bruguera, of Spain.

Monica Seles took only 42 minutes to dispatch Italy’s Rita Grande 6-0, 6-0 to set up a semifinal meeting against seventh-seeded Conchita Martinez in the semifinals of the du Maurier Open in Toronto.

Martinez defeated No. 4 seed Lindsay Davenport 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The other semifinal will pit Anke Huber of Germany against Mary Joe Fernandez. Huber defeated third-seeded Amanda Coetzer of South Africa, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Fernandez, the 10th seed, ousted unseeded Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4.
