Ferris Senior Qualifies For Dressage Honor

Katey Randall of Spokane, who will be a senior at Ferris High School this fall, has qualified to become a member of the United States Dressage Federation Region 6 Advanced Young Riders team.

Randall, 16, who trains at Marshland Equestrian Center in Cheney under Jennifer Bohlman Smith, recently competed in the 1997 North American Young Riders Championships in Chicago.

Baseball

Three Spokane-area athletes played for the Washington Rainiers, who took fourth in the AAU 17-and-under National Baseball Championships in Norman, Okla.

Eric Sandberg (Ferris) made the all-tournament team after hitting .452 with four doubles, five home runs and 14 RBIs. He pitched six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out nine.

Sam Hess (Mead) hit .448 with four doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs and Brian Munhall (Ferris) hit .583 with four RBIs in four games before a wrist injury restricted him to one inning of pitching in the final game.

Justin Padden of Freeman has signed a letter-of-intent to play at the University of Dallas. He is a pitcher.

The University of Dallas, a private, Cathloic liberal arts school in Irving, Texas, is an NCAA Division III school that is resurrecting its baseball program after a 17-year absence.

The Spokane Pony Baseball league all-star team, the Spokane Monarchs, won the district tournament in Pullman and then finished third in the Northwest Regional Pony tournament in Kirkland. The all-stars were Jeremy Nichols, Steve Hare, John Petri, Jeremy McVay, Justin Webley, Greg Malone, Bo Baeschlin, Seth Gemar, Chris Rodgers, Nick Velis, Patrick Donovan, Jason Wederspahn and Jerin Harper.

Basketball

Kelli Kronberger, a 1996 graduate of Washington State University, has joined the women’s basketball coaching staff at Gonzaga University.

Kronberger replaces Keri Schwenke, who resigned Aug. 1 to accept a teaching and coaching position at Coeur d’Alene High School.

Kronberger is a native of Prineville, Ore., and a 1992 graduate of Crook County High School.

Running

June Machala, 66, of Spokane set a national age-group record with a time of 35 minutes, 19 seconds over the seldom-run distance of 8 kilometers at the Steel Day competition in Newport Beach, Calif. She has set age-group marks in her last four events.

Soccer

Idaho United, a team of 15-17-year-old boys from Idaho, Washington and Montana, won the Plate Division of the Northern Tyneside Tournament in Whitley Bay, England.

Brandon Clark of Coeur d’Alene, who scored two goals in the playoff rounds, was named to the all-tournament team.

Jeremy Williams of Sandpoint, Derik Fausett of Spokane and Scott Prudence of Rathdrum, Idaho, also played key roles.

In the final of the 137-team tournament, Idaho United defeated Seaton Burn Boys Club 1-0.

In the Dana Cup in Hjorring, Denmark, Idaho United tied for first in qualifying rounds, but lost to Tatran Presov of Slovakia, a professional team and Slovakian national champion the last two years, in the first round. The Slovaks outscored their opponents 63-2 in winning the championship.

Softball

The Angels girls fastpitch team is looking for players for its 18-and-under select team for the 1998 season.

Water skiing

Trevor Britton of Spokane broke a Rocky Mountain Region jump record at the Mighty Moose 2 tournament earlier this month in Rexford, Mont.

Britton, 16, who has trained this summer at Moose Country Ski Camp, sailed 145 feet off the 5-foot ramp. He also placed first in slalom and tricks for his age division (Boys 3).

Britton’s sister, Bonny, was first in slalom, trick and jump in her division (Women’s 1) and jumped a personal-best 102 feet, a national qualifying distance.

Volleyball

The University of Idaho’s Gold and Silver scrimmage is set for 6:30 pm. Saturday at Memorial Gym.

UI boosters

The University of Idaho Alumni Association and Vandal Booster Kickoff Cruise will be held Monday night from 7-9 on Lake Coeur d’Alene.

Football coach Chris Tormey, athletic director Oval Jaynes and other Vandal athletic staff will be on hand.

Cost is $15 per person, $10 for high school and under. Boarding will begin at 6:30.

The schedule for Latah County Vandal Booster noon lunches at the University Inn-Best Western in Moscow: Mondays, Aug. 25, Sept. 8, Sept. 15 and Sept. 29; Tuesdays, Sept. 2 and Sept. 23. Cost is $7.

Miscellany

Andrew Longeteig has been hired as sports information assistant at the University of Idaho. Longeteig, 22, is a 1993 graduate of Boise’s Borah High School. He has worked at the UI student newspaper, The Argonaut, for three years.
