Three Hurt Jumping To Escape Blaze

From Staff And Wire Reports

Three people were injured Saturday when they jumped out windows to escape a burning apartment building in Beaverton.

About two dozen residents at the Villa Lapine Apartments were awakened by the three-alarm fire, which was reported abound 3 a.m., said Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue spokesman Tim Birr.

Andrew Spencer, 27, suffered a dislocated shoulder when he leapt from his third-floor apartment. He was in fair condition at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital with possible head and back injuries.

A couple in a second-floor apartment tossed a mattress through the window and jumped to safety. Justin Ivory, 21, and Jennifer Dashney, 18, were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Five apartments were destroyed, and nine others were damaged by smoke or water, Birr said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it was believed to be accidental, Birr said.
