Robert Hosack Moscow

Memorial service for Robert Ewing Hosack, a retired University of Idaho professor, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Moscow First Presbyterian Church. Short’s Funeral Chapel in Moscow is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hosack died Monday. He was 86.

He was born in Pennsylvania and grew up and attended school in the Pennsylvania area.

Mr. Hosack attended the College of Wooster in Ohio and received a bachelor’s degree in history in 1932.

He went on to receive a master’s degree in political science from the University of Chicago in 1934.

He taught high school American government and history in West Virginia from 1934 until 1939 and also served as athletic manager.

Mr. Hosack taught political science at Duke University in North Carolina from 1942 to 1943 before moving to Moscow in 1943.

He was a political science instructor at UI and took a sabbatical from 1967 to 1968 to earn a doctorate from Duke University.

He had served for a year as a visiting professor of political science at Tunghai University in Taiwan before retiring in 1974.

He moved to the Good Samaritan Village in Moscow in 1987.

Mr. Hosack served two terms in the Idaho House of Representatives from 1974 to 1978 and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

He was past chapter president of Phi Beta Kappa and a member and past chapter president of the American Association of University Professors. He was also a member of the Association for Asian Studies and was past director of the Idaho Institute of Christian Education.

His wife, Nancy, died in 1992.

Mr. Hosack is survived by a son, Charles Hosack of Coeur d’Alene; two daughters, Elizabeth Reynolds of Boulder, Colo., and Harriet Karmon of California; and four grandchildren.

Denton Sahlie Post Falls

Visitation for Denton L. Sahlie, 64, will be today from 3-8 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery in Post Falls. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Community United Methodist Church in Coeur d’Alene. Mr. Sahlie, who was born in South Dakota, died Monday.

He grew up in Portland and graduated from high school there.

He later served in the Air Force with the 84th Airborne Division at Geiger Field in Spokane.

Mr. Sahlie moved to Spokane in 1955 after his military service and joined the Asbestos Workers Union Local No. 82 and worked construction jobs throughout the Northwest.

He settled in Benton City, Wash., in 1964 and worked at the Hanford Nuclear Plant until retiring in 1982.

He moved to Twin Lakes, Idaho, in 1984 before settling in Post Falls in 1993.

Mr. Sahlie was a member of the Community United Methodist Church of Coeur d’Alene, Civil Air Patrol and the Benton City Police Reserve and served as a chief and volunteer for Benton City Fire Protection District 2.

He was also a member and vice president of the Twin Lakes Improvement Association.

Survivors include his wife, Maxine; two sons, Mike and Larry Sahlie, both of Spokane; a brother, Eugene Sahlie, and a sister, Judy Tauscher, both of Oregon; and a grandson.

Ida Space Coeur d’Alene

Graveside service for Ida Ruth Space, 91, will be today at 2 p.m. at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Space, who was born in Weippe, Idaho, died Sunday.

She moved to Orofino, Idaho in the 1920s before moving to Coeur d’Alene in 1935.

Miss Space had worked as a live-in caregiver and worked with the elderly and disabled.

She was an adherent of the American Baptist faith.

Survivors include nine nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and nephews.

Albert Strayer Newport, Wash.

Memorial service for Albert T. Strayer, 86, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Church of Christ in Newport. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Strayer, who was born near Oldtown, Idaho, died Sunday.

He graduated from Newport High School in 1930.

In 1933 he married Eleanor Martin in Newport.

He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation, and served as Pend Oreille County clerk and also as county auditor. He also worked for the public utility district in Newport as an accountant.

He retired in 1974.

Mr. Strayer was a member of the United Church of Christ, Diamond Lake Grange, the Newport Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star and Knights of Pythias.

He was active with the Pend Oreille County Rodeo and the Pend Oreille County Historical Society.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Nancy Flint of Columbia Falls, Mont., and Ann Beeman of Portland; a half-brother, Tom Strayer of Oldtown; three half-sisters, Ruth Baggett, Evelyn Ferguson and Frances Singleton, all of Alberta; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Paul Shackelford Priest River

Private family service for Paul Calvin Shackelford, 67, was held at an earlier date. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Shackelford, who was born in Kansas City, Mo., died Friday.

He grew up and attended school in California and worked as a mechanic and service manager for various car dealerships in the San Diego area.

Mr. Shackelford moved to Missoula in 1990 before returning to California.

He moved to Priest River last year.

Survivors include three sons, Arnold and Dennis Shackelford, both of Montana, and Lyman Shackelford of California; a daughter, Roxanne Lerner of California; his fiancee, Glenna Brown of Priest River; a half-brother, B.G. Shackelford of Illinois; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Grace Burch St. Maries

Graveside service for Grace Burch, 76, will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries. Yates-Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Burch, a lifelong St. Maries resident, died Saturday.

She grew up and was educated in St. Maries and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Burch was involved in Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Girls and local 4-H programs.

Her husband, Frank, died in 1983.

Survivors include a son, Ken Burch of St. Maries; a daughter, Linda Timken of Medimont, Idaho; a brother, Howard Kendall of St. Maries; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Florence Hudson Coeur d’Alene

Visitation for Florence Edythe Hudson, 85, will be Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home. Service will follow at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hudson, who was born in North Dakota, died Sunday.

She grew up and graduated from high school in North Dakota and later moved to Montana.

Mrs. Hudson moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1948.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James.

Survivors include a daughter, Verna Brekke of Yakima; a son, Glenn Whitlow of North Dakota; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Lee Mann Springdale, Wash.

Memorial service for Lee Boswell Mann, 42, will be at 4 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mr. Mann, who was born in Tonasket, Wash., died Friday from injuries suffered in a construction accident in Spokane.

He was a 1972 graduate of Oroville (Wash.) High School.

In 1974 he married Candis Jones. They lived in Oroville and in 1976 moved to Spokane. In 1981 they moved to Springdale, Wash.

Mr. Mann worked for Garco Construction. He was also a general foreman of the iron workers in the construction of the Spokane Veterans Arena.

Mr. Mann was a member of the Iron Workers Union and the WIAA-Women’s Basketball Referee Association.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jennifer Langford of Spokane and Jessica Mann, at the home; two sons, Gordon Mann of Springdale and Phillip Mann at home; his parents, Clarence and Sandra Mann of Oroville; two brothers, Mike Murray of Okanogan, Wash., and Terry Mann of Oroville; a twin sister, Sandra Brown of Idaho Falls; and a granddaughter.

Clara Lombard Spokane

Private service will be held for Clara Pearl Lombard, 74. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Lombard, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Saturday.

She was a graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and was a member of St. John Vianney Parish.

In the 1940s she worked as a clerk for Sears.

Survivors include two sons, Frank and John Lombard, both of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Orval Massengale Spokane

Visitation for Orval L. Massengale, 75, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial to follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Rosalia, Wash., Mr. Massengale died Monday.

He served in the Air Force during World War II and later farmed in the Colfax-Rosalia area for many years. He later worked as a mechanic.

His wife, Katherine May (Burke) Massengale, died in 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin Massengale of Cheney and Kit Massengale of Newman Lake; a daughter, Diana Leigh of Spokane; two brothers, Arnold and Earl Massengale, both of Spokane; a sister, Edna Courtney of Spokane; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Sheila Morris Spokane

Memorial service for Sheila A. Morris, 20, will be at 2 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

Born in Longview, Wash., Miss Morris died Thursday from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on I-90 near Butte, Mont.

She had attended North Pines Junior High School and was involved with Crosswalk.

She is survived by a daughter, Hailey Morris, at the home; her parents, Leroy Morris and Jeannie Wolke, both of Wichita, Kan.; her grandparents, Hank and Marge Eiden of Newport, Wash., Marion Wolke of Salem, Ore., and Mildren Monroe of Spokane.

George Martin Spokane

No service will be held for George M. Martin, 94. Cremation arrangements are by Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Mr. Martin, who was born in Vicksburg, Miss., died Saturday.

He was a retired educational technician at Washington State University and a 28-year Spokane resident.

His memberships included the North Hill Masonic Lodge 210, Silver Bow Lodge 48, and Albion Chapter 85 and Audubon Chapter 214 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

His wife, Thelma, died last May.

He is survived by three children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
