Telecommunications Firms Approve Buyout

In a marriage of fast-growing makers of telecommunications products, Comverse Technology Inc. on Thursday agreed to buy Boston Technology Inc. in a stock swap worth $858 million.

Both companies make equipment, software and services for telecommunications companies. Comverse also makes systems that digitally record voice messages.

The new company will retain the name of Comverse Technology and will be headquartered in Woodbury, N.Y.
