Lindsay Davenport, who has never gotten past the quarterfinals in a major, heads to the U.S. Open on perhaps the best roll of her career, capped off by a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Sandrine Testud in the finals of the U.S. Women’s Hardcourt Championships at Stone Mountain, Ga.

Deputy Commander, entered when Touch Gold was withdrawn, won a stirring stretch duel with Behrens by a nose to capture the 128th running of the Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Deputy Commander, ridden by Chris McCarron, gained the lead in the stretch and Behrens, with Jerry Bailey aboard, moved up to challenge him stride for stride to the wire. For McCarron, it was a bittersweet victory. His mother died Tuesday.

Awesome Again was the show horse.

Former New Hampshire coach Charlie Holt and two Minnesota stars were inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame at Eveleth, Minn.

Holt joined Tim Sheehy and the late Bill Nyrop in the class of 1997 at a ceremony at the Hall of Fame museum.

Series MVP Brian Bock hit a two-run homer in Bakersfield’s six-run fourth inning as the California team defeated Prince George’s County of Maryland 10-6 to win the Babe Ruth World Series at Longview, Wash.
