Williams’ 6 Rbis Tie 1-Inning Mark

Matt Williams homered and doubled to drive in a record-tying six runs during a 10-run fourth inning Wednesday night, leading the visiting Cleveland Indians over the Anaheim Angels 10-4.

Marquis Grissom added a grand slam in the big inning as the Indians overcame a 3-0 deficit. Williams hit a three-run homer, his 28th, off Allen Watson. Later, he hit a three-run double off Shigetoshi Hasegawa to tie the major league record for RBIs in an inning.

Matt Stairs was the last player to drive in six runs in an inning, accomplishing it on July 5, 1996, during a 13-run outburst by Oakland against the Angels.

Indians rookie Jaret Wright (5-2), a 21-year-old right-hander whose father, former Angels pitcher Clyde Wright, was in the stands, didn’t allow a hit after giving up a run-scoring double to Rickey Henderson in the second inning. He pitched seven innings.

Orioles 7, Royals 3 Baltimore

Rafael Palmeiro hit two homers, a solo shot and the tie-breaking grand slam in the eighth inning, to carry Baltimore past visiting Kansas City.

Chili Davis hit a three-run homer, becoming the eighth player in Royals’ history to hit a home run in four straight games. Kirk Gibson was the last to do it, in 1991.

Palmeiro’s fourth career grand slam was his 31st home run of the season and sixth in 10 games.

Baltimore starter Scott Erickson had a no-hitter through five innings.

Twins 2, Tigers 0 Minneapolis

Minnesota’s Bob Tewksbury pitched a five-hitter for his 100th career victory, winning for the first time since June 20.

Tewksbury (5-10), who returned from the disabled list Aug. 17, struck out five and walked one in his fourth complete game this season and second shutout.

The Twins’ Chuck Knoblauch went 0 for 3, stopping his hitting streak at 18.

Blue Jays 13, White Sox 2 Toronto

Joe Carter hit his 202nd home run with Toronto, tying George Bell’s club record, to reach 20 for the 12th consecutive season.

Carter, who drove in four runs, followed fourth-inning singles by Mariano Duncan and Jose Cruz Jr. with his 377th career homer, tying Norm Cash for 35th place on the career list.

Pat Hentgen (14-8) pitched a six-hitter for his league-leading ninth complete game. He was perfect until Albert Belle’s leadoff single in the fifth.

Rangers 7, Brewers 1 Milwaukee

Rusty Greer hit a solo homer and Tom Goodwin a two-run double as Texas stopped its three-game losing streak and Milwaukee’s four-game winning streak.

Darren Oliver (11-10) won his fifth consecutive decision, allowing one run and six hits in seven innings.

Steve Woodard (3-3) gave up six runs and eight hits in three-plus innings, leaving because of a strained muscle in his side.

Clearing the bases

Palmeiro is the first Oriole to hit 30 homers in three straight seasons. He had 39 in each of the past two years. … Davis’ homer gave the Royals 30 from their DHs, a team record for one season. … Chicago’s Dave Martinez went 0 for 4, ending his career-high 19-game hitting streak.
