IN PASSING

Thomas D. Perry Jr., manager of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1954 to 1973 and its executive director from 1973 until his retirement in 1978, died Aug. 24 at his home in West Stockbridge, Mass. He was 83. The orchestra’s summer program at Tanglewood which Perry attended as a music student during its opening season, in 1940 was doubled to eight weeks during his tenure, and its reputation as a school for promising young musicians grew considerably.

TO THE ALTAR

Salman Rushdie, the author of “The Satanic Verses,” who has lived in hiding for nearly a decade as the object of an open-ended Islamic death sentence, was married in secret on Thursday in the Hamptons on Long Island. The new Mrs. Rushdie, whose maiden name is being withheld to protect her safety, is a poet who had collaborated with Rushdie on an anthology of modern Indian writing.
