Ryafan Wins Again

Compiled From Wire Services

Ryafan held off fast-finishing Maxzene to win the $700,000 Matriarch Stakes by a head at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, Calif., her fifth straight win.

Later, 12-1 long shot Subordination won the $500,000 Crown Royal Hollywood Derby by three-quarters of a length over Lasting Approval.

Ryafan is almost a sure bet to win an Eclipse Award as North America’s top female turf runner.

Ridden by Alex Solis, she covered 1-1/4 miles on a rain-soaked turf course in 2:05-4/5 and, as the 2-1 favorite, paid $6 to win.

Favored 2-year-old star Coronado’s Quest, with Mike Smith aboard, led all the way in winning the $200,000 Remsen Stakes by five lengths at Aqueduct in New York, his third straight stakes victory.

Edgar Prado lost the first nine races at Laurel, but won the 10th on Hardball to become the fourth jockey to win 500 races in a year.
