Stanford Wins Big Island

Stanford scored 19 of its last 21 points from the free-throw line Sunday night as the No. 15 Cardinal held off Butler for a 99-86 victory in the championship of the Big Island Invitational Tournament in Hilo, Hawaii.

Kris Weems scored 29 points to lead Stanford (4-0). Mark Madsen added 17 points, Peter Sauer 16 and Arthur Lee 15.

Butler (4-2) got within 47-40 with 5:27 left in the third period, but Tim Young converted a three-point play for Stanford, which led by at least 10 points the rest of the way.

Matthew Graves scored 27 points for Butler.

Late Saturday, Stanford made 19 of 24 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold off a Valparaiso comeback and nail down a 70-65 victory that allowed it to reach the finals.

Reserve Evan Wiley scored 29 points to lead the Sooners (4-2) over the Vulcans (0-3) to take seventh place at the Big Island Tournament.

At Honolulu, Jason Collier scored 23 points and Luke Recker added 22 as the Hoosiers (2-2) beat the Indians (1-6) in the consolation game of the Tipoff Tournament.

(23) Rhode Island 86, Boston U. 63

In Boston, Tyson Wheeler scored 23 points as the Rams (2-1) ended the Terriers’ 15-game home winning streak.

Wisconsin 78, Montana 61

Hennssy Auriantal scored 19 points as the Badgers (3-1) beat the Grizzlies (2-2) to take fifth place in the Big Island Invitational.
