UW Wants In, Too

Grayden Jones Staff writer

The University of Washington also wants a piece of Eastern Washington University.

UW President Richard McCormick said Tuesday that the Huskies want to be “useful” in a proposed plan to merge EWU into the Washington State University system.

“We’re not looking to horn in on something,” said McCormick, whose school began soliciting students this fall for a Spokane-based master’s program in business administration.

“We have long wished for an opportunity to serve the people of Eastern Washington,” he said. “We would welcome a chance to be a part of this plan, perhaps as a junior partner.”

McCormick called a proposal to merge the two schools “a bold and admirable step.”

UW long has considered itself the university of all of Washington, drawing students from the east side of the state and dispatching its medical school interns to Spokane hospitals. The UW board meets every other year in Spokane, and member Mari Clack is from Spokane.
