Canada Carriers To End Mail Strike

Associated Press

Targeted by back-to-work legislation, Canada’s postal workers said they would end a two-week strike today - but will vent their anger by allowing delivery of unstamped letters.

A bill to end the nationwide strike went speedily through Parliament on Wednesday, prompting the Canadian nion of Postal Workers to announce that its 45,000 members would be back on the job at noon today.

But union president Darrell Tingley said the workers, who faced fines if they continued to strike, would find other forms of protest.

“It’s safe to say we will not have time to check the postage,” Tingley told a news conference. The public “can put whatever amount of stamps they want on them and we’ll process the mail, because we won’t have time, because of the volumes, to look at it.”

The postal workers went on strike Nov. 19 over wages, changes to routes and job security.

The two-week shutdown devastated mail-order businesses and charities that rely on Christmas-season mail solicitations.
